Lucas Mulinga is an 18-year old young man from Kitengela, Kajiado County. He learned about SHE SOARS in 2023 through his friends who were members of a Youth Savings and Loan Association group.
“Before SHE SOARS, I was idle and had nothing to do. Through the skills I gained in the sessions I attended, I was able to find employment in a Video Game Den. I enjoy my work and love the job,” He says.
Lucas describes his experience in SHE SOARS as eye-opening. Once he joined his group, he gained knowledge on Gender Based Violence, how to deal with stress, and life skills including decision-making, independence, critical thinking, self-esteem, and avoiding substance abuse.
He looked forward to the group sessions held in health facilities linked to the project, as these sessions covered topics involving Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights, including contraceptives, and HIV prevention methods.
His work involves collecting money and remitting back to the manager of the den. Lucas supports his parents financially with the income he earns monthly. The rest of his earnings is ploughed into his savings, a practice he learnt through attending SHE SOARS sessions on financial management.
Lucas also advises his friends on their Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights, and counsels them on getting tested for HIV, knowing their status, and taking preventative medication such as Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis. The health facilities SHE SOARS introduced him to are very supportive, and provide contraceptives free-of-charge. He encourages teenagers to visit hospitals where doctors are always ready to assist them.
“Teenagers should be exposed to Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights as it gives them knowledge they never had before. If they visit a hospital, the doctors will sit and talk with them, and help them.” He says.
“Thank you to SHE SOARS for giving the community the opportunity to explore more. I encourage teenagers to join SHE SOARS and build themselves.” He concludes.
